Violence
What is it?
violence during the civil rights movement only embodied the racial hatred. during this time, the increase of lynchings, cross burnings and beatings increased as protesters began to take a stand.
MobsPeople who were outraged by civil rights acts would come together in protest. unlike marches, these mobs would target homes or businesses on threatening terms. often time leading to violence through beatings and often times lynchings. mobs would form about anything from civil rights activists or even having a person of color move into an all white neighborhood. as seen in Levittown where an African American family had moved into an all white com unity and faced much harassment from mobbing neighbors (History Engine).

BombingsMade by home chemicals, bombs would be constructed secretly by extremist groups. Bombings became common during the civil rights movement as a vicious way to target homes, businesses, and even churches who were involved in the civil rights. with this method of protest, many buildings were destroyed, money was lost, and lives taken (History).

KKKoften associated with bombings and mobs, the KKK was a symbol of anti civil rights. Most powerful in the south, the KKK would often target civil rights activists as well as hold their own marches. it was common for them to preform cross burnings in front of African American homes and even bomb certain places. their influence was most relevant in the city of Birmingham which became nick named "bombingham" as a result to their actions (History).
