Civil Rights Protest
The Five Methods Of Protest
The five methods of protest were Boycotts, sit-ins, civil disobedience, marches, and violence. to get specific information on each method of protest, select the button below.
Sit-ins
Sit-ins were just one form of protest. People of color often were not allowed service unless they sat in a certain colored section. As a form of nonviolent protest, groups of colored individuals would cheerfully sit in the area designated to whites only and polity request to be served. If not served, the protest group would remain seated there until the restaurant employees gave in and provided them food or until they were forcefully removed. This forceful removal often consisted of brutal harassment from other people and ended up with the protesters behind bars. Their treatment during their protest represented what was wrong in society as people were being beaten and arrested for sitting in the wrong seat. (Rodgers notes)
Where it began
Sit ins grew in a form of non violent protest. Success in a sit in was to be eventually served food or being arrested on the ridiculous terms of sitting in the wrong seat. yet, it all began with a sit-in done on February 1, 1960. Four African American collage students entered a whites only dinner in North Carolina and asked to be served coffee. when the server refused, they stayed at the dinner even after being harassed. Even though their efforts to be served coffee were not successful, their actions had a national impact. With that, the sit-in era was born. an average of 1,500 sit-in participants were arrested.
